Lewis Carroll is the ‘fake name’ of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson. He was born in Daresbury in the year 1832. He died because of a pneumonia in Guidford on January 14th 1898. Lewis was the third child in his family. His family existed out 11 brothers and sisters. He went to Oxford in 1851. In Oxford he graduated at the Christ Church College as a mathematician. He became famous because of his books he’d written. Especially the books for children. His most famous books are: Alice’s adventures in Wonderland, witch came out in 1865. Through the Looking-Glass, this one came out in 1872 and The Hunting of the Snark came out in 1876 and that was also the last one.
Not only Lewis Carroll, but also Sir John Tenniel has become famous. John Tenniel made the illustrations in the books of Lewis Carrol. Most illustrations are based on something of his own life. As example, Alice –from the book Alice’s adventures in Wonderland- is based on the girl who called Alice Liddell. She was a daughter of a teacher/colleague of John Tenniel when he did the university in Oxford. John Tenniel was a co-occupant, he lived by the family Liddell. Alice Liddell was the sister of Henry Liddell. Henry is was not only the illustrator of the books of Lewis Carroll. Henry George Liddell, what is his full name, has done many jobs. Like: he was dean of Christ Church, Oxford. Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University. Headmaster of Westminster School. Author of A History of Rome. Co-author of the monumental work A Greek-English Lexicon, for most people famous as Liddell and Scott. This is also used by many students of Greek. And at last the illustrator of the book Alice’s adventures in Wonderland, which Lewis Carroll has wrote for the daughter of Henry Liddell, Alice.
Back to Lewis Carroll, on a summer day Lewis went to a picnic with Henry and his four daughters. Wich Alice is one of, she told him great story’s, like Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and of course that was different, but it is based on her story’s. When Lewis started to write, he used the story as keynote, based on the bible and Shake Spear and there it was. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.
Lewis lived in a family of eleven children, he was the eldest. Eleven is much, so Lewis had to take care and entertain himself. Not only for himself, also for his brother and sisters. Lewis was always excelled in math’s and won many academic prizes. When he became twenty years old, he was more focused on literature. Instead of lecturer in mathematics, he was an admit photographer. But not only photographer, take for example the: The Hunting of the Snark. He wrote a lot of essay’s, political pamphlets and poetry. The Hunting of the Snark, is a perfect example to show his ability in the literary nonsense.
Lewis was inspired by young children, he loved to entertain them. Just like Alice, he told her many story’s, when they were sitting on his couch, he told her fantastic tales of dream worlds and she loved it. They spending many hours together and at the picnic when he told her about a fantasy world, she began to think. When she arrived home, she had clearly decided that Lewis had to write the story down for her. So he did and by coincidences Henry read the book and told Lewis to published. It was a big success, when Lewis died his book: Alice’s adventures in Wonderland, was the most famous book in England. In the year 1932 it was the most famous book in the world. Without Henry, this probably never happened.
